Biography
Aníbal Martel Peña (b. 1978, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain) is a documentary photographer and visual journalist-researcher based in Williamsburg, Virginia. Since 2011, he has worked internationally on editorial assignments while developing long-term, research-driven documentary projects focused on cultural memory, migration, identity, and the relationship between communities and place.
His practice operates at the intersection of documentary photography and visual anthropology, combining sustained fieldwork with archival research and institutional collaboration. His work has been exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), Angel Orensanz Foundation (New York), Casa de Colón (Gran Canaria), the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C., and the Louisiana State Museum (The Cabildo, New Orleans; Capitol Park Museum, Baton Rouge), among others.
Aníbal is the co-creator of CISLANDERUS, a long-term documentary and cultural research project developed in collaboration with scholar Thenesoya V. Martín de la Nuez. The project traces the legacy of Canary Island descendants in the United States and has been presented in museum, institutional, and academic contexts, contributing to broader discussions on heritage, diaspora, and transatlantic cultural history.
